Zirconia Ceramic vs Zirconium

Most people comparing these rings are really deciding between zirconia ceramic and zirconium, because they create black in completely different ways.

The colour in zirconia ceramic runs through the full depth of the ring, not just the surface. It is one of the lightest ring materials available, so when you pick one up it feels noticeably lighter than any metal band. The surface is highly scratch resistant, but ceramic is brittle, so a hard impact onto tiles or concrete can crack it, although this is rare.

Zirconium begins as a grey metal. Through heat treatment the surface turns black, creating a dark oxide layer over the metal beneath. That underlying grey is often left visible as contrast lines or bands, which is why many zirconium designs include natural polished edges or centre bands. Because zirconium is a metal it will not shatter like ceramic, though the black surface can develop marks with wear. Other metals used in black rings

Some designs combine other metals with black detailing. Tungsten carbide rings are the heaviest pieces in the range, while titanium and cobalt offer a lighter feel on the finger. Several rings include carbon fibre inlays, which add a woven black texture. Patterned pieces also include forged designs such as black damascus rings, where each ring carries a unique layered pattern.

Ring profiles and fit

How a ring feels during daily wear depends largely on the profile shape. Court and comfort fit profiles have rounded inner edges that slide on more easily and tend to feel smoother over long periods of wear. Flat bands create a more defined edge against the finger, while chamfered rings soften that edge with a slight angled bevel. Width and sizing

Widths across the range run from 4mm through to 9mm. Narrow bands feel lighter and often suit smaller hands, while wider rings create more presence on the finger and allow space for patterns or contrast bands.
