Zirconium Rings
Zirconium rings are defined by the depth of their black surface, created by heating the metal until its outer layer oxidises and turns permanently black — not a coating, so it can’t peel or flake.
In most designs the black forms the main body of the band, with narrow areas of natural grey zirconium left exposed to create contrast and definition. Handled in person, the black has a darker, deeper tone than many coated black rings, with brushed finishes softening reflections while polished lines catch light against the darker background.
This collection includes widths from 7mm to 8.7mm in both court and flat profiles. Some rings use natural centre bands or parallel tramlines, while others place the lighter metal off-centre for a more unusual layout across the width of the ring.
These rings are held in stock in UK sizes P to Z+6, with engraving carried out in-house for those who want to add a personal message inside the band.

Black zirconium rings and their distinctive finish
The black finish
The black colour comes from a controlled oxidation process where the surface of the zirconium is heated until it transforms into a black oxide layer. Because the colour is formed from the metal itself rather than applied as a coating, the black becomes part of the surface rather than something that can separate from it. Brushed finishes give the black a muted appearance, while polished edges or lines reflect light more strongly and highlight the contrast with the darker surface.
In many designs the lighter grey sections are simply the natural zirconium beneath the black oxide, revealed where the oxidised layer has been removed or masked during finishing. This is what creates the narrow offset bands, centre lines and edge details seen in many rings. Further background information about the metal can be found in the Zirconium Buyer’s Guide.
Design details
Several rings use narrow natural bands to break up the black surface. Offset bands run slightly to one side of the ring, while centre bands sit directly through the middle. Tramline designs use two parallel natural lines to frame the black surface between them. Grooved or ridged rings add texture that changes how the black finish catches light.
One distinctive design is the Celestial Nebula ring. This piece contains anodised aluminium fragments set within black sand under jewellery-grade resin. As the ring rotates the colours shift slightly, creating the impression of a small nebula suspended within the darker band.
Ring profiles
Court and flat profiles affect how the ring sits on the finger. Court profiles have a rounded exterior and interior edge, which tends to feel smoother when worn throughout the day. Flat profiles present straighter edges and a more defined outline on the hand. A more detailed explanation of these shapes is available in the Ring Profiles Guide.
Engraving
Zirconium rings can be engraved in-house. On the black oxidised surface the engraving appears black on black, visible when examined closely but intentionally subtle. Where a design includes exposed natural grey zirconium, the engraving contrasts clearly against the lighter surface. Dates, initials and short messages are the most common choices.
Sizing
These rings are held in stock in UK sizes P to Z+6. Wider rings tend to sit more firmly on the finger, so some people choose a slightly larger size when moving to a wider band. Additional sizing advice is available in the Ring Width Guide.
Further technical background on the metal itself can be found in the Zirconium Technical Guide.
