Personalised Engraved Dog Tag: Design Yours in 3D
Design your own dog tag from scratch and see exactly what it will look like before you order. The 3D tool on this page is a design tool, not the engraving itself. Use it to lay out text on both sides of the tag, choose a font, add a medic alert symbol, or upload your own transparent PNG artwork. The final engraving is produced in a contrasting black finish on brushed titanium.
A personalised engraved dog tag is a small metal pendant carrying laser-engraved text, images, or both, worn for identification, medic alert use, or as a keepsake.

Design a Personalised Engraved Dog Tag Online
The interactive 3D preview shows how your text or image will sit on the finished tag. Drag the tag to rotate it, flip between the front and back sides, type your engraving, and the preview redraws in real time. You can turn the tag, change orientation from portrait to landscape, switch fonts, and adjust size. Nothing is sent to our server while you design.
This preview tool lets you visualise the laser engraving before you commit to an order. The physical engraving itself is cut at our workshop once you order. The tool shows the text layout, font choice and image placement so you can make decisions before you buy.
For background on how laser engraving works on different metals, see our engraving information hub.
Black where you want engraving, transparent elsewhere
Privacy: your image stays on your device and is never uploaded to our servers. The share link cannot include a custom image, but the downloaded zip will have your preview.
This design tool handles the most common requests, but we can do far more than what you see here. If you have a specific idea, unusual artwork, or anything the preview will not let you build, get in touch before you order. It may well be possible.
Engrave Up to 6 Lines of Text on Both Sides
Every personalised engraved dog tag has two sides. You can engrave both sides independently, with up to 6 lines of text on each side. That is 12 lines total if you use every line, with each line taking up to 30 characters including spaces.
Each side can use its own font and its own orientation. You can set the front side to portrait so text reads along the short axis, and the back side to landscape so it reads along the long axis. This is useful when one side carries a name and the other carries a longer address or message.
For guidance on choosing a font that engraves cleanly at small sizes, see our engraving fonts page.
Upload Your Own Design: Transparent PNG Artwork
The front side of the tag supports a feature image in place of text. You can choose one of the preset medic alert symbols, or upload your own artwork. Uploaded artwork must be a transparent PNG file with the design in black and the background fully transparent.
Black pixels become the engraved area. Transparent pixels leave the titanium surface untouched. JPG and GIF files do not support transparency and cannot be used. Solid white or coloured backgrounds engrave as a black rectangle with the design inside it, so make sure the background is cleared before you upload.
Common uploads include:
- A child's drawing scanned or photographed and cleaned up in an image editor
- A loved one's handwriting or signature
- A personal logo or family mark
- A custom medical symbol not in our preset list
Your uploaded image stays on your device. We do not store it, and it is not included in any share link you generate from the preview tool. To send your design to us for engraving, use the Download button in the preview to save a zip of the preview images and email it to us with your order.
If you need help extracting clean handwriting from a card or note, our handwriting engraving tool prepares images so they engrave well on metal.
Create a Medical Alert Dog Tag
A medic alert dog tag carries essential information that a first responder needs to see at a glance. The preview tool includes eight preset medic alert symbols, or you can upload your own. Pair the symbol on the front with clear text on the back: condition, medication, blood group, emergency contact.
Typical uses for a medic alert dog tag:
- Diabetes, epilepsy, heart conditions or other ongoing conditions
- Severe allergies where rapid treatment is needed
- Anticoagulant medication such as warfarin
- Organ donor status
- Dementia or autism with a contact number for a carer or family member
- ICE (in case of emergency) contact details for children, athletes or travellers
Titanium is hypoallergenic, which matters for people who wear a medic alert dog tag every day against the skin. The tag will not tarnish and will not react with sweat or sea water.
The engraving tool is for personalisation. It is not medical advice, and a medic alert dog tag does not replace speaking to your doctor about how to manage your condition.
How the Dog Tag Preview Tool Works
The 3D preview is built to answer one question: what will my engraving look like on a personalised engraved dog tag? Here is what the tool lets you do.
- Rotate: drag the tag with your mouse or finger to turn it in 3D. There are also buttons to flip between front and back, turn the tag 90 degrees as if you were holding it, or auto-rotate for a full spin.
- Type text: enter up to 6 lines on each side. The preview redraws as you type. Font, bold, italic and orientation are set per side.
- Choose an image: pick from the preset medical alert symbols or upload a transparent PNG. Text on the front side is replaced by the image when an image is active. An optional caption line can sit under the image.
- Size the engraving: auto mode fits your text to the usable area with a safety margin. Manual mode lets you shrink or grow the engraving to taste.
- Download: saves a zip of three preview images (current view, front, back), a 360 degree rotation video, a QR code, and a readme.
- Share: generates a share link containing your text and preset settings. Uploaded custom images cannot be shared by link because the data is too large to fit in a URL.
The preview renders all engraving as a contrasting black finish on brushed titanium, which is what the engraving looks like in real life. The design tool is representative rather than exact, so there will be small differences between the preview and the final laser engraving.
Why We Make Our Engraved Dog Tags in Titanium
Most dog tags on the market are aluminium or stainless steel. We use titanium for our personalised engraved dog tags because it holds laser engraving cleanly, is lightweight enough to wear every day, and is hypoallergenic.
- Contrast: titanium takes a laser engraving as a crisp black mark against a brushed silver background, giving high contrast without ink or paint.
- Weight: titanium is around 40% lighter than stainless steel, which matters when you wear a tag on a chain every day.
- Corrosion: titanium does not tarnish, rust or react with sea water, sweat or most chemicals.
- Skin-friendly: titanium is biocompatible and suitable for people with metal sensitivities to nickel or other alloys.
- Strength: the tag is 2.55mm thick, substantial enough to feel solid but not so thick it sits awkwardly against the chest.
For a comparison of titanium against other engravable metals, see our engraving appearance guide.
Popular Uses for a Personalised Engraved Dog Tag
Medic Alert for Everyday Wear
The most common use. A clear medical symbol on the front, condition and emergency contact on the back. Worn on a chain under a shirt or visible on a collar.
A Child's Drawing Kept Close
Scan a child's drawing, clean it up, save as a transparent PNG, and upload. A personalised engraved dog tag with a drawing on one side and the child's name and date on the other.
Handwriting from a Loved One
A signature, short note or handwritten name engraved onto titanium makes a personalised engraved dog tag that preserves a moment. Often used as a memorial piece after a parent, grandparent or partner has passed.
Emergency Contact for Sport and Travel
Runners, cyclists, hikers, climbers and solo travellers wear a personalised engraved dog tag with name, emergency contact and any relevant medical details. Lighter than a bracelet and less likely to catch on gear.
Pet Owner Contact Details
A contact tag for a dog or cat collar. Owner name, phone number, and any medical notes for the pet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I engrave both sides of the dog tag?
Yes. This is a double sided engraved dog tag. Each side can carry up to 6 lines of text with its own font and orientation, or the front can carry a feature image instead of text.
Can I upload my own design for engraving?
Yes. Your own artwork, handwriting, a child's drawing or a custom logo can all be engraved. The file must be a transparent PNG with black artwork on a fully transparent background. JPG and GIF files do not support transparency and are not accepted.
Can I add a medical alert symbol?
Yes. The preview includes eight preset medical alert symbols. Choose one for the front of the tag and put your personal or emergency details on the back. You can also upload a different medical symbol as a transparent PNG.
What colour will the engraving be?
All laser engraving on titanium is produced in a contrasting black finish against the brushed silver titanium surface. The 3D preview tool shows this same black finish so you can see how the engraving will look.
Is this page the actual engraving, or a preview?
This is a design preview tool. It helps you visualise the layout, choose a font, and position text or artwork before you commit to an order. The physical laser engraving is produced at our workshop once an order is placed.
Can I engrave a child's drawing or someone's handwriting?
Yes. Both engrave well on titanium, provided the artwork is supplied as a clean transparent PNG. If you need help preparing a scan of a drawing or handwritten note, see our handwriting engraving tool.
How much text can I fit?
Up to 6 lines per side, 30 characters per line, giving a total of up to 12 lines across both sides. The auto-fit feature scales the text so it uses the available space without crossing the safety margin around the edges of the tag.
Can I share my design with someone else?
Yes, if you are only using text and preset symbols. The Share button generates a link that opens the preview tool with your design loaded. Uploaded custom images cannot be included in a share link because the file size is too large to fit in a URL. For custom uploads, use the Download button and email the zip instead.
Will the final engraving match the preview exactly?
The preview is representative. Font rendering, alignment and proportions will match. Fine details of how the laser interacts with the metal surface may vary slightly. Engraved items are non-returnable, so please review your preview carefully before ordering.
What should I check before I order?
Spelling, punctuation, line breaks, and the position of your image or caption. Save a copy of the preview zip for your records. If you have any doubts, email the preview images to engraving@titanjewellery.co.uk before you order. See our engraving policy and laser engraving FAQ for further detail.
