Wedding Ring Engraving Ideas and Inspiration

If you are hunting for wedding ring engraving ideas, or for a straight answer to the question of what to engrave on a wedding ring, this page is the workshop's working reference. It collects more than 200 wedding ring engraving ideas organised into twelve categories: romantic phrases, couple names and initials, wedding dates, Roman numerals, GPS coordinates of meaningful places, symbols, split messages that run across a matching pair of rings, fingerprints, handwriting, foreign language phrases, humour, and fandom references for the couples whose shared world includes Middle-earth, Star Wars, Morse code, or a line of binary. Every idea fits the practical 35 character limit we engrave on our standard rings.

Wedding ring engraving ideas, Roman numeral date engraved around a black and grey zirconium band
Wedding ring engraving ideas: Roman numeral date on black zirconium

Our ideas for personalised wedding ring engraving are drawn from nearly four decades of workshop experience engraving titanium, tungsten, cobalt chrome, and tantalum bands at the bench, not scraped from other jewellery sites. If you want to know which of those metals engraves best and why, we have written a full comparison on our best rings for engraving page. Every category below includes a preview button that loads the text into our 3D ring preview tool so you can see what it will look like before you commit.

The single hard limit to know before you start is 35 characters for inside engraving, including spaces and punctuation. If your message will not fit, the titanium dog tag takes up to 6 lines of text on each side and is the alternative we offer for longer messages.

Wedding ring engraving ideas by category

Romantic Wedding Ring Engraving Ideas

The category most customers ask for first. The instinct is to say everything you feel, which is why most romantic engravings end up too long for the ring. The ones that work best are short, direct, and sound like something you would actually say out loud rather than something you read on a greetings card. A single sentence in your own voice will outlast any borrowed quote.

Examples (within 35 characters)
  • Yours, always 13
  • My one and only 15
  • Home is wherever you are 24
  • Still you, still me 20
  • Love of my life 15
  • Every day with you 18
  • Choose you again 16
  • Heart, soul, hands 18
  • Yours from the start 20
  • You and me, no matter what 26
  • The best part of my day 23
  • My favourite person 19
  • Found you, kept you 19
  • Beside you, always 18
  • You first, you last 19
  • Held tight 10
  • Heart full 10
  • The quiet centre of my world 28
  • Where you go, I go 18
  • Mine, kindly 12
  • Steady on 9
  • The one I waited for 20
  • Yours, top to toe 17
  • You, every time 15
  • Two halves, one ring 20
  • All in 6
  • Not without you 15

The Engraver's Tip. Read your engraving out loud before you commit to it. If it sounds like something you would actually say to your partner, it will age well. If it sounds like something off a fridge magnet, it will not.

Name and Initial Engraving Ideas

Names are the simplest engraving you can choose, and one of the longest lasting. A name engraved on the inside of a ring needs no explanation in fifty years' time, which is more than can be said for some of the cleverer options on this page. Initials work where names are too long, and they tend to look more elegant on narrow bands.

Format examples
  • Sarah 5
  • James & Sarah 13
  • James and Sarah 15
  • J & S 5
  • JMS & SLT 9
  • From J, to S 12
  • Sarah, my own 13
  • JS 4ever 8
  • Mr & Mrs Bennett 16
  • The Bennetts 12
  • S, with all of me 17
  • For Sarah, from James 21

The Engraver's Tip. Decorative scripts look beautiful in cursive on paper, but a long full name in a script font on a 3mm ring will lose detail fast. For long names or narrow bands, choose a clean font from the fonts page and let the name speak for itself.

Date Engraving Ideas for Wedding Rings

Dates are the second most common engraving after names. The wedding date is the obvious choice, but customers also engrave the date they met, the date of the proposal, an anniversary, or the date of a child's birth on a ring given for a renewal. The format you choose matters more than you might think. Short formats fit anywhere. Long formats need a wider band.

Format examples
  • 14.06.25 8
  • 14.06.2025 10
  • 14 June 2025 12
  • 14th June 2025 14
  • June the 14th, 2025 19
  • Jun 14 '25 10
  • 14 Jun 2025, Maidstone 22
  • Since 14.06.2025 16
  • From 14.06.25, always 21
  • Met 03.09.18, Wed 14.06.25 26
  • Day one: 14.06.2025 19
  • Our day, 14 June 2025 21
  • 14 06 25 8
  • 14/06/2025 10
  • 2025 06 14 10

The Engraver's Tip. If you want both the date you met and the date you married on the same ring, the format Met 03.09.18, Wed 14.06.25 at 26 characters is the cleanest way to do it without going over the limit.

Roman Numeral Wedding Ring Engraving Ideas

Roman numerals are a sophisticated alternative to a numeric date. They look distinctive on the finger, they suit decorative fonts, and they reward a moment of curiosity from anyone who notices them. The format is simple once you know it. Day, month, year, separated by full stops or spaces. We are happy to convert dates to Roman numerals for you if you tell us the date you want, or you can look it up online and send it ready-formatted.

Format examples
  • XIV.VI.MMXXV 12
  • XIV VI MMXXV 12
  • 14.VI.MMXXV 11
  • XIV.VI.25 9
  • III.IX.MMXVIII 14
  • I.I.MMXX 8
  • XXV.XII.MMXXIV 14
  • S & J, XIV.VI.MMXXV 19
  • Ours: XIV.VI.MMXXV 18
  • Day I: XIV.VI.MMXXV 19
  • X.X.MMXXIV 10
  • II.VI.MMXXIII 13

The Engraver's Tip. Long Roman numeral dates can run to 14 characters before you add anything else. If you also want a name or initial, keep the date short by using a 2-digit year or by separating with spaces rather than full stops.

Coordinate and What3Words Engraving Ideas

The latitude and longitude of a place that matters. Where you met. Where you proposed. Where you married. Where you spent your first holiday together. Coordinates are quietly clever, easy to look up on any map app by right-clicking the spot, and almost always fit within the 35 character limit if you abbreviate sensibly.

If classic latitude and longitude feels too technical, What3Words is the other option worth knowing about. It divides the entire world into 3 metre squares and gives every square a unique three word address. Short, memorable, fits comfortably in the character limit, and arguably easier to remember than a string of decimals. Look up the three words for your meaningful place on the What3Words app, double check them carefully, and engrave them exactly as shown. Both formats are shown below so you can see how each one sits on a real ring.

The coordinate formats above point to real UK places. Type any of them into a map and see where they take you. GPS hints: one is a famous London zebra crossing, one is a stone circle on Salisbury Plain, one is a Scottish loch with a castle, one is a Northern Irish rock formation, one is the western tip of Cornwall, and one is where the Second World War was won with a pencil and a paper tape machine.

The What3Words addresses in the list are real too, and each points to a notable UK landmark. Drop any of them into the W3W app to see where they land. What3Words hints: one is the coronation church of every English monarch since 1066, one is a Kent country house owned by the same family for four centuries, one is the Scottish border village where runaway couples have married since 1754, one is the mother church of the Church of England, one is the open air museum of Welsh life near Cardiff, and one is the Hampshire castle familiar to anyone who has watched a certain ITV period drama.

The Engraver's Tip. Decimal degrees to two or three decimal places will pin you down to within a city block, which is usually enough. If the place truly matters to the metre, use four decimal places, or use a What3Words address which is already accurate to 3 metres. And double check your coordinates before you order, because we engrave the text exactly as you supply it.

Symbol Engraving Ideas

A symbol on its own, or a symbol paired with a short phrase, can say more than a sentence. Most standard symbols on a UK keyboard engrave cleanly. Some require a custom graphic file, particularly hearts, infinity loops, and small pictograms. If you want a symbol we do not list here, ask. The simpler the shape, the better it will engrave on a small surface.

Symbol wedding ring engraving idea, initials heart and date inside the band
Engraved textS ♥︎ J, 14.06.25
Examples (text and symbol combinations)
  • S & J 5
  • 1
  • S ∞ J 5
  • J + S = ∞ 9
  • ♥ S ♥ 5
  • S ♥ J, 14.06.25 19
  • * always * 10
  • ~ ours ~ 8
  • S > J > ∞ 9
  • ♥ 14.06.25 ♥ 11
  • ∞ us ∞ 7
  • + ♥ + 5

The Engraver's Tip. Hearts and infinity loops engrave best as separate graphic files, not as keyboard characters, so they look properly drawn rather than relying on the font designer's interpretation. Tell us what you want and we will set it up correctly.

Split Message Engraving Ideas for Paired Rings

One of our favourite categories, and one that only works if you order both rings together. A phrase or thought is split across the two rings, so each ring carries half of the meaning, and the full sentence only exists when the two rings are read side by side. The idea is older than the wedding ring industry, but laser engraving has made it precise enough that the halves line up properly.

Ring oneSplit message wedding ring engraving idea, First love, ring one of a matching pair
Engraved textFirst love
Ring twoSplit message wedding ring engraving idea, Last love, ring two of a matching pair
Engraved textLast love
Two rings, one matching pair. Both made and engraved together so the fonts and spacing align.
Pairs (ring one / ring two)
  • To have / To hold 7 / 7
  • You are / My home 7 / 7
  • For better / For worse 10 / 9
  • I am yours / You are mine 10 / 11
  • My heart / Your hands 8 / 11
  • Until the / Very end 9 / 8
  • The best / Is yet to come 8 / 13
  • Where you / I follow 9 / 8
  • Hand in / Hand 7 / 4
  • Always / And ever 6 / 8
  • You + me / Against the world 8 / 16
  • Two halves / One whole 10 / 9
  • Our story / Our rules 9 / 9
  • I chose you / You chose me 11 / 11
  • The vow / Kept 7 / 4
  • One day / Every day 7 / 9
  • This is us / This is ours 10 / 11
  • Written in / Our hands 10 / 9
  • Side by / Side 7 / 4
  • I do / I always will 4 / 14
  • First love / Last love 10 / 9

The Engraver's Tip. Split messages need both rings to be ordered together so we can match the font, size, and spacing across both. Tell us in the order notes that the two engravings are a matched pair.

Fingerprint Engraving Ideas

A fingerprint engraving is the most personal mark a ring can carry. Your partner's fingerprint, your child's, or the fingerprint of someone no longer with us, captured at the size of the band and laser etched into the inside or outside of the ring. We offer the full process in-house, from photographing the print on a smartphone through to cleaning the image up and engraving it. The process is explained step by step on our fingerprint engraving page, which also has the upload tool and the cleanup tool. Our existing range of fingerprint rings shows the finished result on a variety of metals.

Variations we engrave
  • Single fingerprint, inside the band
  • Single fingerprint, outside the band
  • Two prints side by side, both partners
  • Child's fingerprint as part of a renewal ring
  • Print of a parent or grandparent no longer with us
  • Fingerprint paired with a name or date
  • Fingerprint on outside, text engraving on inside
  • Thumb print taken in ink, photographed and uploaded
  • Multiple small prints in a row, one for each child

The Engraver's Tip. The fingerprint does not need to be a forensic-quality scan. A clear photograph taken on any modern smartphone, in good light, against a plain background, gives us everything we need. Our cleanup tool handles the rest before the file goes to the laser.

Handwriting Engraving Ideas

Your own handwriting, or your partner's, or a phrase written by someone you have lost. Photograph the writing, upload it through our handwriting tool, and we will engrave it onto the ring exactly as it appears on the page. It is a different kind of engraving from typed text. Where typed text is neat and uniform, handwriting carries the personality of the writer in every loop and slant. We can engrave love notes, signatures, single words from old letters, and lines taken from handwritten vows or notes that mean something to you.

Handwriting wedding ring engraving idea taken from a real handwritten note
Engraved textHandwritten engraving
Variations we engrave
  • Your own signature
  • Your partner's signature
  • A short handwritten phrase, photographed from a note
  • "I love you" in your partner's handwriting
  • A name written by a child
  • A signature from an old letter belonging to a parent or grandparent
  • Both partners' signatures, one on each ring
  • A single word that means something only the two of you understand
  • A line from your written vows in your own handwriting

The Engraver's Tip. Use a black fineliner or biro on plain white paper for the cleanest scan. Avoid pencil, which is too faint, and avoid lined or coloured paper, which gets in the way of the conversion. The handwriting tool will guide you through the rest.

Foreign Language and Latin Engraving Ideas

An engraving in another language adds a layer of meaning that only the two of you, and anyone who happens to share the language, will catch. Latin is the classic choice and still the most popular. French, Italian, and Spanish all engrave beautifully and feel familiar enough to most readers to carry their meaning. Welsh, Irish, and Scottish Gaelic add a layer of heritage for couples with roots in those nations. All of the examples below use Latin script with diacritics where appropriate, which our laser handles cleanly.

Scottish Gaelic

Examples

  • Tha gaol agam ort 17

Translations: My love / Forever / I love you

The Engraver's Tip. If you do not speak the language fluently, double-check the phrase with a native speaker before you commit. Online translators are usually right but sometimes catastrophically wrong, and we engrave exactly what you send us.

What We Will and Will Not Engrave We are an easy-going workshop. Cheeky text, rude text, and the kind of in-jokes that would make your grandmother blush are all fair game. We may giggle at the bench but we will not judge. The handful of things we will not engrave are hate speech and slurs, threats of violence, content that is illegal in the UK, and copyrighted material you do not have the rights to use. Everything else is on the table. If you are not sure, ask us at engraving@titanjewellery.co.uk and we will tell you straight.

Funny Wedding Ring Engraving Ideas

Not every engraving has to be serious. Some of our favourites are the cheeky, self-aware, or downright daft ones. The best humorous engravings are the ones that mean something to both of you, the kind of in-joke that would make you laugh in twenty years' time as well as today. The inside of the band is the perfect place for them, because the joke is yours alone.

  • Worth every argument 20
  • Cheaper than therapy 20
  • Still my favourite mistake 26
  • Officially yours 16
  • Stuck on you 12

The Engraver's Tip. The cheekier the engraving, the more we enjoy setting it up. If your idea makes you hesitate, send it to us anyway. Very little on this list would raise an eyebrow at the bench.

Fandom and Code Engraving Ideas

For couples whose shared world includes Middle-earth, a galaxy far away, a starship, or a code only the two of you crack. Some of these we engrave as text in the standard font. Others, like Star Wars Aurebesh or Tolkien's Tengwar, work best when you supply us with the rendered image of the phrase, because they need a specific font file the laser will not have by default. Morse code and binary, on the other hand, are just dots, dashes, and digits, and engrave straight from text.

Fandom wedding ring engraving idea, Star Wars I love you I know split pair

Star Wars and science fiction

Examples (within 35 characters)
  • I know 6
  • I love you / I know 9 / 6
  • The Force, and you 18
  • May the Force be with us 24
  • Always, in all ways 19
  • Engage 6
  • Make it so 10
  • Long live the rebellion 23
  • The galaxy is ours 18

Note: "I love you / I know" is the classic two-part split for Star Wars couples, one phrase per ring. Aurebesh script versions can be supplied as an image and we will engrave from the file.

Tolkien and fantasy

Examples
  • One ring 8
  • Not all who wander are lost 27
  • The road goes ever on 21
  • I am yours, you are mine 24
  • Even in darkness 16
  • Far over misty mountains 24

Note: Tengwar (Elvish script) renderings can be supplied as an image and we will engrave from the file. Make sure your translation is correct before sending.

Klingon (Latin transliteration)

Examples
  • qamuSHa' 8
  • bangwI' SoH 11
  • reH SoH bangwI' 15

Translations: I love you / You are my beloved / You will always be my beloved. The pIqaD script version can be supplied as an image.

Morse code

Examples
  • .. .-.. ..- 12
  • ... --- ... 12
  • -.-- ----- ..- 14
  • .-- . -.. 9
  • .-.. --- ...- . 15
  • --- ..- .-. ... 15

Translations: I L U (I love you) / SOS / YOU / WED / LOVE / OURS. Morse spaces use a single space between letters and a slash or wider gap between words.

Binary

Examples
  • 01 = us 7
  • 1 + 1 = 1 9
  • 01001001 01000100 17

Translations: The two-byte example reads "ID" in ASCII binary. Full words in binary get long fast and rarely fit within 35 characters.

The Engraver's Tip. For any non-Latin script (Aurebesh, Tengwar, pIqaD), send us a high resolution image of the phrase rendered in the script you want, and we will engrave from the file. The cleaner the source image, the cleaner the engraving.

When Your Message Is Too Long for a Ring

Sometimes 35 characters is not enough. A favourite poem, a paragraph from a vow, a long quotation, or a list of names that matter all break the limit. The answer is not to crush your message into the band by shrinking the font until it cannot be read. The answer is to put it on something larger.

Our titanium dog tag takes up to 6 lines of text on each side, which is enough room for almost anything you want to say. Customers wear them on chains, attach them to keyrings, hang them in cars, or keep them in wallets. The same fibre laser that engraves our wedding rings engraves the dog tags, with the same precision and the same range of fonts. If your message will not fit in 35 characters, this is where it should go.

About the Preview Images on This Page The ring images shown next to each category above are software renders generated by our own engraving preview tool, not photographs of finished workshop pieces. The tool renders your chosen text on a three-dimensional ring model in real time, at the actual size and proportions of the band, so you can see exactly how your engraving will sit before you commit. Every category above has a "Try this in the preview tool" button that opens the tool with the shown text and font already loaded. From there you can type your own text, change the font, switch the metal, and rotate the ring to see the engraving from any angle.

Preview your engraving before you order

Once you have picked one of the wedding ring engraving ideas above, you can see exactly how it will look on a real ring before committing. Whether you call yours a ring or a band, wedding band engraving ideas are easier to commit to when you see them rendered on a 3D model at the actual size and proportions of the finished band. Our engraving preview tool renders your text in any of our standard fonts, so you can type your phrase, choose your font, and see the finished engraving in seconds. It is the only tool of its kind on a UK wedding ring site, and we built it ourselves.
