How to Measure Ring Size at Home

Workshop guidance from Jason Beer, Titan Jewellery This guide is written by a working goldsmith with 38 years on the bench, registered as a sponsor with the London Assay Office under sponsor mark TJ for hallmarking sterling silver and gold, operating from a workshop in Kent. Titan Jewellery specialises in alternative metal wedding rings, including titanium, tungsten carbide, cobalt chrome, tantalum, Damascus steel, zirconium, zirconia ceramic, superconductor, sterling silver, and made-to-order gold and platinum. We make our sterling silver and gold wedding rings in-house, set diamonds and gemstones at the bench, and carry out all laser engraving on our own JPT fibre laser. We make wedding rings in sizes H to Z+12, with particular specialism in the larger sizes for men. The advice on this page reflects what we tell customers in person every working day.

Why ring sizing matters more for alternative metals

If you are wondering how to measure ring size at home, the answer depends partly on which metal you are buying. Most jewellery sizing advice was written for gold and silver, which can be resized in a workshop. Alternative metals are different.

Tungsten carbide, zirconia ceramic, zirconium, cobalt chrome, Damascus steel, and superconductor cannot be resized at all. Once made, the size is fixed. Titanium and tantalum can sometimes be adjusted within narrow limits, but the work is harder than resizing gold, the result is not always clean, and most workshops will not attempt it. We do not promote resizing as a fallback, because it is not a reliable option for the metals we specialise in.

This means getting the size right before you order is essential. A wrong-size tungsten or ceramic ring cannot be resized and often cannot be resold, which makes it a costly mistake for both the customer and the workshop. We would rather spend time helping you arrive at the correct size than process a return we cannot adjust. The guidance on this page is built around that priority.

The three reliable methods of knowing your size

There are three reliable answers to the question of how to measure ring size at home. Each has its place. The right one depends on what you have available and how much time you have before you need to order.

Professional measurement

A jeweller measures your finger using a set of metal sizing rings calibrated to UK standards. This is the most accurate starting point when done by an experienced fitter, because the jeweller can feel the fit on your finger directly.

Most high street jewellers will do this as a courtesy if you ask, even when you are not buying from them. Ask which width of sizer they used so you can allow for the difference if your wedding ring will be wider.

Best for: Anyone who has not been measured recently and has a jeweller within reach.

Watch out for: Most jewellers measure with narrow sizers around 2mm to 3mm wide. If the ring you want to order is wider, the size you are given will be slightly too small. See the section on width below.

Measuring an existing ring

If you already own a ring that fits the correct finger comfortably, you can measure its inside diameter and convert that to a UK size. This is reliable if the ring is round, undamaged, and worn on the same finger you intend to wear the new ring on.

Measure across the widest point of the inside, not the outside, and measure more than once to confirm. A digital caliper gives the most accurate reading, but a steel ruler with millimetre markings will also work if you measure carefully.

Best for: People with a well-fitting ring already. Faster than ordering a sizer.

Watch out for: Bent or worn rings give bad measurements. Rings worn on a different finger are not reliable. You will still need to allow for width if the new ring is meaningfully wider than the one you measured.

Our Multisizer

Our adjustable Multisizer is a precision-made plastic tool that measures every UK size from A to Z+9. You wear it on the finger you intend to wear the ring on, adjust it to a comfortable fit, and read the size from the printed scale.

We post it the same working day for £1.99, and the £1.99 comes back to you as a discount code on your ring order. It is the only home method that lets you feel the actual fit before committing to a size.

Best for: Anyone who is uncertain, has not been measured recently, or wants the highest confidence before committing to a non-resizable metal.

Watch out for: Measure your finger at the end of the day when it is at its largest. Measure more than once. Try the sizer on the actual finger you will wear the ring on.

A note on measuring tools

One full UK ring size is around 0.4mm of internal diameter difference. Half a size is 0.2mm. These are tiny differences in absolute terms, which is why some customers assume measuring with string or paper will be close enough. It is not. A string measurement that is 1mm out from the true diameter is two and a half UK sizes wrong, which is enough to make a wedding ring fall off your finger or refuse to go on at all.

Even between professional measuring tools there is variation. Most retail jewellers use ring sticks, which are lightweight tapered tools, often aluminium, marked with the UK size scale. They are convenient for quick measurements at the counter, but they feel lightweight and cheap in the hand for a reason. Different ring sticks from different suppliers do not always agree with each other to the nearest half size. We have around a dozen ring sticks in our workshop and we have noticed up to a quarter of a size of variation between them.

What we actually use at the bench is a triblet. A triblet is a solid tapered steel rod with the size markings machined directly into the metal. It is the tool a goldsmith uses to shape rings during making, and unlike a ring stick it is heavy, solid, and machined to precision. It is far more durable and far more accurate than a retail ring stick. After 38 years on the bench, I would always trust a triblet reading over a ring stick reading. Most customers will never have heard of a triblet, because they live in workshops rather than shop windows, but they are the standard against which other measuring tools should be compared.

The practical implication is this. If you have been measured at a high street jeweller, the size you were given is a good starting point but not necessarily a final answer to the nearest half size. If your size matters precisely, because you are buying a ring you cannot resize, the Multisizer is the most reliable home option. It lets you feel the actual fit on your own finger rather than relying on the calibration of someone else's tool.

What a correct fit feels like

A properly fitted wedding ring should slide on with light resistance, sit securely on the finger without rotating freely, and require a small push or twist to come back over the knuckle. If a ring drops off the moment your hands are cold, it is too loose. If it becomes uncomfortable or leaves a deep mark when your hands are warm or after exercise, it is too tight.

Finger size changes through the day and across the seasons. Most people are slightly larger in the evening than in the morning, slightly larger in summer than in winter, and slightly larger after exercise or a warm shower than at rest. The variation is usually around half a size in either direction. Measure your finger at the end of the day when it is at its largest, because a ring that fits in the morning may become uncomfortably tight by evening, but a ring that fits in the evening will only feel slightly loose first thing in the morning. The latter is the more comfortable mistake to make.

Why ring width affects fit

How to measure ring size for different widths, with four ring widths and a Multisizer

This is the part most online sizing guides miss, and it is the single most common cause of wrong-size orders we see. A wider ring sits tighter on the same finger than a narrow one. The reason is simple. More of the ring is in contact with the skin, and there is less room for the natural taper of your finger to give.

As a working rule, a ring that is 6mm wide will feel slightly tighter than a 3mm ring of the same nominal size. An 8mm ring will feel noticeably tighter. A 10mm or 12mm ring will feel tighter still.

Most jewellers measure with narrow sizers around 2mm to 3mm wide, so if you were measured for a thin band and you are now ordering a wider one, the size you were given is likely to be too small for the wider ring. The exact compensation depends on the ring profile, the width of the sizer you were measured with, and the shape of your own finger. Our interactive width sizing guide explains the relationship in detail.

Open the ring width sizing guide

How much does width affect ring size in practice

The width sizing guide above does the precise calculation for any specific situation, but most customers want a working rule of thumb to start with. Here is the rule we use at the bench, based on the width difference between the gauge you were measured with and the ring you want to order.

If the ring you are ordering is the same width as the gauge you were measured with, no adjustment is needed. Order the size you were given. If the ring you are ordering is up to 3mm wider than the gauge, consider going up about half a size. If the ring is 4mm to 6mm wider than the gauge, consider going up half a size to a full size. If the ring is more than 6mm wider, consider going up about a full size. The reverse applies if your new ring is narrower than the gauge you measured on.

A specific example. Our Multisizer is 4.5mm wide, which is the gauge most of our own customers measure themselves on. If you measure yourself on the Multisizer and want to order a 5mm or 6mm ring, the width difference is small enough that no adjustment is needed beyond the comfort tolerance built into the Multisizer reading. For a 7mm or 8mm ring, consider going up about half a size. For a 2mm or 3mm ring, consider going down about half a size, because the narrower ring will feel looser than the Multisizer reading suggests.

These are guidelines, not exact rules. The actual adjustment depends on the shape of your finger, the profile of the ring (a flat profile sits slightly tighter than a court profile at the same width), and your personal preference for fit. For a precise calculation that takes your specific situation into account, use our width sizing guide. For a non-resizable wedding ring, the Multisizer remains the most reliable starting point because it lets you feel the actual fit before committing.

A note on ring profiles and edges

We make rings in five profiles. Court, also called comfort fit, has a rounded inside and a gently domed outside. Flat is square-edged with a modern look. Flat court is flat on the outside with a rounded inside for comfort, and on our sterling silver range this profile is sometimes also called comfort fit. D-shape is flat on the inside with a domed outside. Blended court is a softer variation of the court profile, available in tungsten only.

Profile affects how a ring sits on the finger as well as how it looks. A flat profile of the same width sits slightly tighter than a court profile, because there is no rounded inside to give the finger room.

Edge finish matters too. Flat-profile rings can have a sharp corner that digs into the neighbouring finger, particularly noticeable when gripping or making a fist. We chamfer the edges of our flat rings to soften this corner, which makes a meaningful difference to all-day comfort. If you have worn a flat ring elsewhere and found it uncomfortable against the next finger, a chamfered edge is likely the difference you were missing.

A note on weight, density, and material properties

Different metals weigh very different amounts at the same size and width. Tantalum is among the densest metals used in jewellery and feels substantial on the finger. Tungsten carbide is similarly heavy. Titanium is the opposite, around half the weight of tantalum at the same dimensions, and many customers describe it as feeling almost weightless after a few days of wear. Cobalt chrome and the steel-based metals fall between these extremes.

Weight is a personal preference, not a quality marker. Some people want to feel the ring on their hand as a constant reminder. Others prefer to forget it is there. Neither is right or wrong, but it is worth thinking about before you commit, because a heavy ring in a wide profile is meaningfully different from a light ring in the same width.

A few material details worth knowing. Our tungsten carbide rings use a nickel binder rather than cobalt, which matters for customers with cobalt sensitivities. Cobalt chrome itself has a bright finish very similar in colour to white gold, which makes it a popular alternative for couples who want the look of white gold without the long-term care requirements. Tungsten carbide is brittle under high impact compared to other metals, and the mass of the ring helps to absorb that impact, which is why we do not make tungsten rings narrower than 3mm. Below that width there is not enough material to maintain the structural strength a wedding ring needs for everyday wear.

The Multisizer is plastic and weightless, so it cannot give you a feel for the actual ring weight. The closest you can get without ordering is to handle a ring of the same metal in person if you have the chance.

A note on size range

We make wedding rings in sizes H to Z+12 across most of our metals, although the exact range varies by metal and width. This is a wider range than most jewellers offer, and the larger sizes above Z+2 are an area we specialise in. If you have been told elsewhere that your size is unusual or unavailable, it almost certainly is not unusual to us.

Across our metals, the relationship between width and size reflects how rings are typically worn. Widths from 2mm to 5mm are usually chosen for women and stocked in the corresponding size range. Widths from 5mm to 12mm are usually chosen for men and stocked in the corresponding size range. 5mm is the crossover width that suits both. Some specific designs are available outside this typical pattern, so always check the individual product page for the exact size range available in your chosen ring.

Larger fingers benefit especially from careful width consideration, because a wider ring on a larger finger can feel significantly tighter than the nominal size suggests. The recommendation cards below show the available size range for each metal, so you can see at a glance whether your size falls within our range for the metal you are considering.

Which metals can be resized

The honest answer is that almost none of the metals we work with can be reliably resized. Tungsten carbide, zirconia ceramic, zirconium, cobalt chrome, Damascus steel, and superconductor are all effectively fixed at the size they are made. Titanium and tantalum can sometimes be stretched or compressed by a small amount, but the work is specialist, the result is not always clean, and we do not offer it as a routine service.

Sterling silver and our made-to-order gold and platinum rings can be resized in the traditional way, but these are a smaller part of what we sell. Our sterling silver rings are made to order in 5 to 7 working days and hallmarked at the London Assay Office under our sponsor mark TJ. The honest position is this: when you order an alternative metal wedding ring, you should treat the size as final. Get it right before you order, and you will have a ring that fits properly for life.

A note on half sizes

Most jewellers can resize gold and silver rings by a small amount because precious metals are malleable. They can be stretched or compressed by a goldsmith to fix small fitting issues after the ring is made. Hard alternative metals like tungsten carbide, zirconium, and zirconia ceramic do not work that way. They cannot be stretched, compressed, or adjusted after machining. The size they finish at is the size they stay.

This is why we make our alternative metal rings in full sizes only (P, Q, R, S, T, and so on) as our official range. The reason is not just the machining itself, although the practical tolerance for these metals is around 0.2mm, which is exactly the difference of one half UK size (a full UK size is 0.4mm of internal diameter).

The bigger factor is the finishing process. Machining gets a ring close to its final form, but every machined ring then has to go through several stages of finishing before it is ready to wear. The machining marks have to be removed with progressively finer grades of paper, then the surface goes through several polishing compounds to remove the paper marks and build the polish up. A ring is not finished until those marks are gone and the surface is right.

Something most people do not realise is that even brushed rings have to be fully polished first. The surface has to be perfect before brushing, because brushing over marks leaves the marks visible through the brushed texture. Brushing is the final step on a ring that already has a flawless polished surface underneath. It is all in the preparation.

All of that finishing removes a small amount of material. Combined with the machining tolerance, the result is that a batch of rings made to the same target size will not all finish at exactly the same point on the UK size scale. Most will land within the tolerance for the size we aimed at, but one or two from each batch may sit slightly above or below it. We grade these honestly as half sizes when they appear, so a batch of 20 rings in size X may produce 18 listed as size X and one or two listed as size X½ or W½.

This is why half sizes on our site often show "low stock" or "last one." It is not a marketing tactic. It is because half sizes are tolerance variants from the finishing process, not part of our official stocked range. If you need a specific half size, it is worth ordering quickly when you see one available, because we cannot reliably reproduce it on demand. If you need a precise half size in a precious metal, our made-to-order sterling silver and gold rings can be made to any size you specify, including quarter sizes if you ask, although in practice 0.1mm is too small a difference for anyone to notice on the finger.

About our Multisizer

Multisizer adjustable ring sizer showing how to measure ring size at home for UK sizes A to Z+9

The adjustable Multisizer is the tool we recommend most often, because it is the most accurate home method available and because the £1.99 cost is refunded against your ring order. It is not a paper printout that depends on your printer scaling correctly. It is a precision-moulded plastic device calibrated to UK ring sizes A through Z+9.

It works like a small belt that buckles around your finger. You feed the strap through, slide it to a comfortable position, and read the size from the printed scale. Because it is adjustable, you can feel the exact fit you want before committing to a size. Snug enough to stay on, loose enough to slide over your knuckle.

We post Multisizers same working day if ordered before 1pm. The £1.99 you pay comes back as a discount code on your next order, so the only real cost is a few days of waiting. For a non-resizable wedding ring you will wear for life, those few days are time well spent.

If you are still uncertain

If you have read this page and you are still not sure how to measure ring size correctly for your situation, the answer is almost always the same. Order a Multisizer first. It costs you nothing in the long run, takes only a few days, and removes the single largest risk in buying a non-resizable wedding ring online. We would rather you measured properly and ordered with confidence than rushed and ordered the wrong size.

If your situation is unusual, such as knuckle-dominant fingers, an existing ring that does not quite fit right, or a partner whose size you are trying to guess for a surprise, please get in touch. We answer messages personally during workshop hours, Monday to Friday, and 38 years of fitting wedding rings has given us a feel for the awkward cases that no online tool will catch.

Ordering a titanium ring in 2mm to 4mm when you know your size

Titanium is light, strong, and hypoallergenic. It cannot be reliably resized once made. You are well placed to order with confidence. A recent professional measurement on a narrow sizer is reliable for ordering a narrow band of 2mm to 4mm, because the width matches the width you were measured at. You can proceed with the size you were given.

One thing to keep in mind: titanium cannot be resized, so if anything about your previous measurement felt rushed or you have not been measured for some time, the Multisizer is always available as a verification step. £1.99, refunded on your order.

Our titanium range is available in UK sizes H to Z+6.

Ordering a titanium ring in 5mm or 6mm when you know your size

Titanium is light, strong, and hypoallergenic. It cannot be reliably resized once made. A recent professional measurement is the most accurate starting point you can have, and for a medium width of 5mm or 6mm the only thing left to verify is the width adjustment.

Most jewellers measure with narrow sizers around 2mm to 3mm wide, so a size taken on a thin band is usually slightly too small for a wider ring. Use our width sizing guide to work out the adjustment for your specific situation.

Because titanium cannot be resized, some customers prefer the extra reassurance of a Multisizer measurement before committing. The £1.99 cost is refunded as a discount on your ring order.

Our titanium range is available in UK sizes H to Z+6.

Ordering a titanium ring in 7mm or wider when you know your size

A recent professional measurement is a strong starting point. Once you decide on the width of your Damascus steel ring, check our width sizing guide to see whether any adjustment is needed.

Wider rings sit tighter than narrow ones at the same nominal size, so the size you were given may need a small upward adjustment for a wider band.

Because Damascus steel cannot be resized once made, the Multisizer is always available for extra reassurance. £1.99, refunded against your ring order.

Our Damascus steel range is available in UK sizes M to Z+3.

If you want a wedding ring in 5mm or 6mm, you have other options in our range. For this width, alternatives in our range include titanium, tungsten carbide, cobalt chrome, tantalum, Damascus steel, zirconia ceramic, and sterling silver.

Our zirconium range is available in UK sizes P to Z+6.

Ordering a zirconium ring in 7mm or wider when you know your size

Our zirconium rings are all black zirconium with natural grey zirconium highlights, giving every ring a distinctive two-tone finish. They cannot be resized once the surface oxide layer is formed. A recent professional measurement is the most accurate starting point you can have, and for a wider band of 7mm or more the only thing left to verify is the width adjustment.

Most jewellers measure with narrow sizers around 2mm to 3mm wide, so a size taken on a thin band is usually slightly too small for a wider ring. Use our width sizing guide to work out the adjustment for your specific situation.

Because zirconium cannot be resized, some customers prefer the extra reassurance of a Multisizer measurement before committing. The £1.99 cost is refunded as a discount on your ring order.

Ordering a titanium ring in 2mm to 4mm from an existing ring measurement

Titanium is light, strong, and hypoallergenic. It cannot be reliably resized once made. Measuring an existing ring is a good approach for a narrow band of 2mm to 4mm, because the new ring will be a similar width to most existing wedding bands. Measure the inside diameter of your existing ring at its widest point and double-check by measuring more than once. As long as your existing ring is round and undamaged, you can order with confidence.

If you have any doubt about the existing ring, the Multisizer removes the guesswork. Posted same working day, £1.99 refunded against your titanium ring order.

Our titanium range is available in UK sizes H to Z+6.

Ordering a titanium ring in 5mm or 6mm from an existing ring measurement

If you have any doubt about the existing ring, the Multisizer removes the guesswork. Posted same working day, £1.99 refunded against your zirconia ceramic ring order.

Our zirconia ceramic range is available in UK sizes J to Z+11.

Ordering a zirconia ceramic ring in 5mm or 6mm from an existing ring measurement

Zirconia ceramic is a high-tech material that produces a true black wedding ring. It cannot be resized or engraved. Measuring a ring you already own is reliable if the ring is round, undamaged, and worn on the same finger you intend to wear the new ring on.

Measure the inside diameter at its widest point. For a medium width of 5mm or 6mm, you will then need to allow for the width difference, because wider rings sit tighter than narrow ones. Our width sizing guide explains the adjustment.

If your existing ring is bent, worn flat, or you are not sure how well it really fits, the Multisizer is a more reliable starting point for a zirconia ceramic ring you cannot resize. £1.99, refunded on your order.

Our zirconia ceramic range is available in UK sizes J to Z+11.

Ordering a zirconia ceramic ring in 7mm or wider from an existing ring measurement
