General questions about what engraving is possible
Engraving Capabilities and Limits
Engraving is quoted as taking up to 5 working days.
This allows for scheduling, setup, and quality checks during busy periods.
When workshop capacity allows, engraving can often be completed the same day, but this cannot be guaranteed and should not be relied upon for time-critical orders.
There is no fixed character limit. Engraving is scaled to fit the available space, so longer text results in smaller lettering.
Legibility depends on ring size, font choice, and the mix of characters used. Narrow letters such as “I” take less space than wider letters such as “M”, so exact limits cannot be set.
As a general guide, smaller rings suit around 20 characters, mid sizes around 25–30, and larger sizes can accommodate 35 or more. Longer engravings have been completed, but readability should always be considered.
If you are unsure, you can contact us for advice based on your ring size, font choice, and engraving layout.
Engraving size depends on the width of the ring and how much flat space is available. Where possible, text is usually engraved at around 2.5mm to 3mm high.
We generally keep engraving to no more than about half the width of the ring. On a 3mm ring this works out at roughly 1.5mm. On a 4mm ring it is usually around 2mm.
Text height is measured from the highest part of the lettering to the lowest. Some letters rise above the main body, while others drop below it. Decorative fonts exaggerate this, which means the text can look smaller even when the measured size is the same.
On thinner rings, simple fonts tend to work best. Styles such as Arial, Verdana, Calibri, Times New Roman, or similar give clearer results and make better use of the limited space available.
Most rings are suitable for engraving on the inside of the band, and this is where engraving is normally done.
Outside engraving is possible on some designs, but it is limited. Flat rings are generally suitable, while curved profiles may be possible depending on the shape and available surface.
Where outside engraving is offered, this can include engraved fingerprints, text, Roman numerals, or engraved handwriting.
Outside engraving is not offered on tungsten rings, as the material and finish are not suitable for external engraving.
Yes, simple images can be engraved, but they need to be lightweight and made up of fine lines so the detail remains clear.
Engraving is often very small. In many cases the image may only be around 2.5mm in size, so clarity is important when choosing a design.
Simple symbols such as heart emojis are engraved regularly. More detailed images may lose definition at this scale.
Engraving is binary. The laser either marks the surface or it does not. Shading, colour, or filled areas are not possible. A red heart or yellow smiley face cannot be reproduced.
The colour of the engraving depends on the metal and finish. It may appear dark or subtle, but it will not be coloured.
Any ring that can be engraved as standard will show an engraving option on the product page. If the option is not shown, the ring is not suitable.
Some rings cannot be engraved for practical or technical reasons. Our 2mm rings are too narrow to produce clear, readable engraving.
We do not engrave carbon fibre inlay rings. These designs use jewellery-grade resin to secure the inlay. During testing, engraving caused audible cracking in the resin due to heat, which could lead to failure over time.
Tungsten spinner rings are also not suitable, as engraving can interfere with the bonding of the moving parts.
Zirconia ceramic rings are currently not offered with engraving. This material requires a specialised lens setup, which we are unable to use at present.
Yes, within reason, and it is something we do regularly.
Custom engraving needs to be technically possible and sensible for the size and shape of the item. Very detailed designs, such as a full coat of arms inside a ring, are not suitable due to the limited space.
If you have a specific request, it is best to contact us first with the ring you are considering, the finger size, and the engraving idea. The engraver can then confirm what is achievable.
Most successful custom requests involve a different font choice or a simple graphic. Items with a larger engraving area, such as titanium dog tags, allow more flexibility than rings.
Yes, it can, but we do not recommend using a ring for critical medical or ID information. In practice, responders are unlikely to check a ring for this type of detail.
For medical or ID engraving, a tag is usually more suitable. We offer a titanium dog tag that can be engraved with up to 6 lines of text and engraved on both sides.
These have been engraved many times with medical information and are a format that medical responders are more likely to look for.

Yes, we can engrave personal fingerprints on many of our rings.
We offer a fingerprint tool that allows you to prepare and preview your design before it is sent for engraving.
We currently have a small number of fingerprint engraved rings available in titanium, and fingerprint engraving can also be possible on other titanium rings. If you have a specific ring in mind, it is best to contact us to confirm suitability.
Titanium is generally the best choice for fingerprint engraving, as it produces a clear, dark contrast that shows fine detail well.
Yes, handwriting and signatures can be engraved.
Where possible, writing done with a finer nib tends to work better. When thick lines are reduced to engraving size, some detail can be lost, although this is not always something that can be controlled.
Space on a ring is limited, so not every piece of handwriting will be suitable. Short messages or simple signatures are usually fine.
We also provide a tool that can help clean up handwritten text before engraving. This is useful for things like older birthday cards or notes from a loved one, where ink has soaked into the paper and left rough or pixelated edges. The tool helps smooth those edges and prepare the design before it is sent to us.
Questions about engraving styles and text layout
Fonts, Layout and Personalisation
There is no fixed limit. In most cases we can engrave almost any font, as long as it is available to us.
We currently offer around 20 fonts on the website, and this list continues to grow. Thinner rings have fewer suitable options, as clear, simple fonts work best at smaller sizes. Wider rings allow more flexibility and a wider range of styles.
Very decorative fonts can be problematic once reduced to engraving size. A font that looks good on a screen can become difficult to read when scaled down. Decorative styles also work better with shorter text, as longer messages often need to be reduced further to fit the space.
If you would like to use a font that is not listed, you can select the “instructions to follow” option when ordering. This places the engraving on hold until we receive and review your font details.
Simple, well-balanced fonts work best on narrow rings. Styles without exaggerated ascenders or descenders tend to stay clearer when the engraving is reduced in size.
Script or flowing fonts usually do not read well on thinner rings, as the detail becomes cramped at small sizes.
On 3mm and 4mm rings, bold text is not recommended. At this scale, bold lettering can visually fill in, and details such as the dot on a lowercase “i” can start to close up.
For thinner rings, we usually recommend fonts such as Arial, Verdana, Calibri, or Times New Roman, or similar clean fonts, used in a regular weight rather than bold.
Yes, you can.
We offer a range of fonts on the website, and you are not limited to those. If you have a specific font in mind, it can usually be used as long as it is available to us and suitable for engraving.
Font choice may be limited on narrower rings, where clear, simple fonts work best. Decorative fonts are more suitable on wider rings or where the text length is short.
If you would like to use a font that is not listed, select the “instructions to follow” option when ordering. This places the engraving on hold until we receive and review your font details.
Either can be used. It comes down to readability and personal preference.
Uppercase text is often clearer on narrow rings, as the letter height is more consistent and there are no ascenders or descenders. This can help the engraving look more even at small sizes.
Lowercase text can work well on wider rings, but readability depends on the font. Some lowercase letters can lose clarity when the engraving is reduced in size.
If you are unsure, a simple uppercase or mixed-case font is usually the safest choice, especially on thinner rings.
Yes, depending on the item.
On our dog tags, we can engrave up to 12 lines of text across both sides, with up to 6 lines per side. In some cases, this can be increased for custom requests.
On rings, multiple lines are possible on wider bands. Adding extra lines reduces the text size, so readability will depend on the font and the amount of space available.
If you have a specific layout in mind, it is best to contact us so we can confirm what is achievable
Yes, we do.
On products that offer engraving, selecting a font will show a preview using pre-generated text so you can see how it looks.
You can also view our engraving examples page, which includes images of engraved rings and sample fonts to help with font selection.
Yes, this is usually possible.
As long as the characters, punctuation, or symbols can be entered into our engraving software, they can be engraved. We have recently engraved text using Hebrew and Chinese phonetics.
We copy the text exactly as provided and cannot take responsibility for spelling, grammar, or meaning in other languages. It is important to check your text carefully before submitting it.
As a basic safeguard, we may run foreign-language text through a translator to ensure it does not contain anything offensive.
Yes, that is fine.
We are happy to engrave rude or humorous text, as long as it can be engraved clearly and fits the space available. We do not judge the wording, although we may have a quiet giggle while engraving it.
We can offer general guidance, but font choice is a personal decision.
The fonts shown in the product options are ones we know engrave well. If readability is important, cleaner and simpler fonts are usually the best choice. On wider rings, some of the more decorative fonts can still remain clear.
Flowing or highly decorative fonts can look very nice, but readability may be reduced. In some cases, the appeal is more about the presence of the engraving rather than how easily it can be read.
Choosing a font comes down to what matters most to you, whether that is clarity, style, or sentiment.
Yes, they do.
Fonts are measured by overall height, but their proportions vary. Some fonts use more of that height for tall or low letter shapes, which can make the main body of the text look smaller.
Decorative or script fonts often appear smaller than cleaner fonts at the same size, especially when engraving is reduced to fit a narrow space. Simpler fonts usually make better use of the available height and appear clearer as a result.
Questions about engraving on different metals
Materials and Engraving Results
Yes, it does, although the difference is usually visual rather than structural.
Most variation comes down to colour and contrast. On some metals, the engraving appears close to the natural colour of the ring. On others, it produces a darker, often black mark.
Each metal reacts differently to engraving, which is why the same text can look different across materials. These differences are explained in more detail in the individual questions below.

Yes, you can.
Engraving is cut into the metal by removing material, not just marking the surface. The metal is vapourised where the engraving is made, so the text sits below the surface of the ring.
If you run a fingernail across the engraving, you will feel the cut channels. During engraving, a slight burr can form, which could feel uncomfortable if left untreated.
To prevent this, all rings are refinished after engraving. The engraved area is polished using a specialist compound to smooth the surface. Once finished, the ring is comfortable to wear, provided it is the correct size.
Titanium is one of the best metals for engraving. Along with tantalum, it produces a strong visual contrast.
Engraving on titanium appears as a dark black mark against the lighter metal surface. This contrast gives clear definition and makes text and fine details easy to see.
Because of this, titanium works especially well for fingerprints, handwriting, and detailed engraving where clarity matters.

Tantalum is one of the best metals for engraving. It engraves to a deep black colour, which creates a strong contrast against the natural tone of the metal.
This contrast gives clear definition to text and details, making engraving easy to see and well defined.

Tungsten carbide can be engraved in either black or white.
Black engraving is generally preferred, as it produces stronger contrast and is engraved deeper into the surface.
White engraving uses lower power and tends to sit closer to the surface. It is visible, but does not penetrate the tungsten to the same depth as black engraving.

Cobalt chrome can be engraved, but the appearance differs from metals such as titanium and tantalum.
Engraving on cobalt can appear either close to the natural colour of the ring or as a darker, black mark, depending on the finish and engraving result.
Over time, any darker engraving on cobalt may wear and soften in appearance. The engraving itself remains, but it may become closer in colour to the surrounding metal rather than staying dark.

Zirconium can be engraved, but the visual result depends on the colour of the metal.
On grey zirconium, engraving usually appears as a dark black mark, which contrasts well against the lighter surface and is easy to read.
On black zirconium, engraving more often appears as black on black. This makes it harder to see visually. In some cases, the engraving may appear grey against black, but this is not something we can reliably control.
This example shows outside engraving of Roman numerals on a grey zirconium ring.

Damascus steel rings can be engraved, but engraving is not offered as a standard option on all of these designs.
Damascus steel is made from layered steels with varying textures and colour tones. As engraving crosses these layers, contrast is reduced and the engraving does not stand out as clearly as it does on more uniform metals.
Because of this variation, we prefer to show real examples before offering engraving on Damascus steel. Some customers are happy knowing the engraving is there, even if it is not crisp or highly readable.
Of our Damascus steel rings, the clearest engraving result is on the woodgrain design. Even so, it does not engrave as clearly as materials such as titanium or tantalum.

On other Damascus patterns, engraving contrast can fade as it passes over darker layers of steel. This can make parts of the engraving harder to see, particularly where black layers are present.
If engraving is chosen, shorter text works best. Keeping the character count low avoids reducing the text size further and helps preserve what contrast is available. We generally advise fewer than 20 characters.

Silver wedding rings engrave cleanly and clearly, usually appearing in the natural colour of the metal.
In some cases, engraving on silver can appear dark or black. This can give stronger initial contrast, but it is not permanent in the same way as on metals such as titanium or tantalum.
If a silver ring is polished, resized, or worked on in the future, any dark engraving is likely to revert to the natural silver colour. The black finish is also less durable and may fade over time through wear or cleaning.
When this happens, the engraving itself remains. Only the colour changes back to the natural tone of the silver.

We also offer a titanium dog tag that is suitable for engraving and is commonly used as a medic alert or ID tag.
Both sides of the dog tag can be engraved, allowing more space than a ring. We can engrave up to 6 lines of text per side, depending on layout and text length.
The larger flat surface makes it well suited to medic alert information, identification details, or longer messages where clarity is important.

No, we do not engrave rings that were not purchased from us.
Inside ring engraving requires very tight control over material, profile, and engraving behaviour. With customer-supplied rings, this information is unknown, which introduces an unacceptable level of risk.
For a full explanation of why this service is not offered, please see our page on engraving customer supplied rings.
Information about engraved orders and changes
Proofing and Order Changes
All engraved jewellery is non-returnable.
This includes returns for refund, exchange of finger size, or exchange for a different product. Once a ring has been engraved, it cannot be resized, exchanged, or transferred to another item.
Engraving is permanent and specific to the exact ring, size, and layout ordered. It is not possible to move engraving from one ring to another or rework an engraved ring to a different size.
If you are unsure about size, design, or layout, we are happy to supply a ring without engraving first. Once you are confident it is correct, the ring can then be returned to us for engraving. We actively encourage this approach if there is any uncertainty.
Full details are available in our engraving policy.
Engraving normally begins shortly after your order is received.
For standard engraving, we allow up to 5 working days. More complex engraving, such as fingerprints, can take up to 10 working days.
Most engraved orders are completed and dispatched within 2 to 3 working days. During quieter periods this can be quicker, while busier periods may take closer to the full quoted timeframe.
Engraving is considered final once the item has been set up on the engraving machine.
At that point, we are committed to the engraving and changes or cancellations are no longer possible. Engraving may begin shortly after an order is placed, or several days later during busy periods.
If you would like to place an order but delay engraving while you decide on the details, select the Instructions to follow option. This places the order on hold until we receive your final engraving instructions.
There is no fixed time limit, but we treat engraving details as final once an order is placed.
Engraving can begin soon after ordering, especially during quieter periods. Changes can be made as long as you contact us before engraving starts. If we do not receive the update in time, the engraving will be completed as originally ordered.
Please note that engraving work can take place outside standard hours and at weekends, so urgent changes should be sent as soon as possible.
The best way to contact us is engraving@titanjewellery.co.uk. This inbox goes directly to the engraving room and is checked before each engraving job begins.
The customer is responsible for checking all engraving content and confirming the correct ring size.
Please ensure spelling, wording, capitalisation, font choice, and ring size are correct before completing your order. Once payment is made, we assume these details have been checked and approved by you.
Engraving text is transferred directly from the website into our engraving system and is engraved verbatim. No manual retyping takes place, so any spelling or grammatical errors entered will be engraved exactly as provided.
If you attempt to space text manually using multiple spaces, these may be removed during processing. If you require custom spacing or layout, it is best to contact us with your request before engraving begins.
If you notice a mistake, please contact us as soon as possible.
Changes can be made as long as we are contacted before engraving begins. If we do not receive the correction in time, the engraving may still be completed as originally ordered.
Engraving can take place outside standard hours and at weekends, so urgent changes should be sent immediately.

Yes, you can cancel an order with engraving, as long as we receive your request before engraving begins.
Once engraving has started, it is considered final and the order cannot be cancelled or changed.
Engraving can take place outside standard hours and at weekends, so cancellation requests should be sent as soon as possible.
The fastest way to reach the engraving room is by email at engraving@titanjewellery.co.uk. If your message is received in time, we will be able to act on your request.
This depends on where the error occurred.
If the engraving is incorrect due to an error on our part, we will of course put this right.
If the item has been engraved exactly as ordered, or in line with any instructions provided, we are unable to accept responsibility for errors in wording, layout, or size selection.
We strongly advise checking all engraving text, layout, finger size, and instructions carefully before finalising your order.
If an engraved ring has been supplied in the correct size as ordered, the sale is considered final.
Our rings are made individually, and small manufacturing tolerances can occur. A variation of up to a quarter of a size, or around 0.1mm, is considered normal and would not be classed as an incorrect size.
Please also note that wider rings fit more snugly than narrow ones. A ring worn comfortably at 3mm may feel tighter when ordered at 6mm. This is a normal characteristic of ring sizing and not a fault.
If you are unsure about your size, we strongly recommend ordering the ring without engraving first. At this stage, exchanges or refunds are possible under our returns policy. Once you are happy with the fit, the ring can then be returned to us for engraving.
Yes, engraving can be added after purchase.
If the ring was purchased from us, it can be returned for engraving. This is common where customers want to try the ring first to confirm the fit, or decide on engraving at a later stage.
There is no need to purchase a new ring. Once returned, we can arrange engraving on the original item.
We recommend contacting us before returning a ring, so we can confirm that the specific design and material are suitable for engraving.
Yes, engraving can be refused, although this is very rare.
We are generally happy to engrave humorous, cheeky, or light-hearted text, including wording that may be mildly offensive, provided it is lawful.
We will refuse engraving that is inciteful, racist, illegal, or otherwise unacceptable. We are also unable to engrave copyrighted or trademarked material, including logos.
If copyrighted or trademarked content is engraved in good faith because it was not recognised at the time, responsibility for its use remains with the customer.
